The continuing land issue involving Amartya Sen on the Visva Bharati University campus has resulted to a police complaint being made by a former student against Vice Chancellor Vidyut Chakraborty and two other officials. The vice chancellor is charged in the case by the alumnus of hurting Nobel laureate Amartya Sen mentally.
Trisha Rani Bhattacharya, the complainant, protested to verbal abuse by referring to the offender as a land encroacher and land thief, and she wanted stern action in accordance with the law. In a letter addressed to the supervisor of Shantiniketan police station in Birbhum district, Bhattacharya made accusations not just against the vice-chancellor but also against deputy registrar Ashok Mahto and university spokeswoman Mahua Bandyopadhyay. In the letter, the complainant expressed his concern that the 90-year-old Amartya Sen's alleged land grab may lead to a major problem in his life since he will be in difficulty.
A Shantiniketan police station employee acknowledged receiving the complaint on Tuesday night. The economist has been charged by the university for trespassing on its property. Sen was requested by the central university to leave the allegedly encroached area within 15 days of the final order's publication on April 19, or by May 6.
The notice specifies that the long-standing institution must be removed from the encroached land and taken back in accordance with the government's advice and the CAG report. The North-West corner of the Scheduled Premises, measuring 50 feet by 111 feet, will be taken back, totaling around 1.25 acres.
